Message from the Chairman

It is a great pleasure to issue this message to the website of the University Grants Commission (UGC) as its Chairman. The UGC was established in 1978 under the Universities Act No. 16 of 1978 and is the apex body of the state university sector in Sri Lanka. During the last 28 years, the university education has been improved rapidly with the establishment of new universities, introduction of new degree programmes in various fields with increased intake of students while providing more facilities and resources.

The UGC is now continuing further, the development projects to improve the relevance and quality of the higher education in Sri Lanka, appropriate to the national development as it’s a prime duty. Using of internet is also becoming more and more public accessible. Therefore, we hope to encourage our students to use internet facilities extensively.

On this occasion, I am pleased to mention that the UGC website has been developed with the aim of providing reliable information at national level required for the nation in the higher education sphere. Also we hope to encourage University staff, students and research community for the requirements of the management information with introducing a virtual linkage through the UGC website.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the MIS Division for developing and maintaining of the UGC website and all other staff for their valuable encouragement and support for such development activities.

Thank you.

Prof. S V D G Samaranayake
