The University Grants Commission (UGC) has established the Division of Research and International Cooperation (DRIC) by restructuring and expanding the former International Cooperation Division (ICD) of the UGC to encompass both Research and International Cooperation. This decision has been made in line with the national policy of promoting the ranking and internationalization of the Sri Lankan universities so as to make Sri Lanka an educational hub in the region.
The Division is headed by Prof. P.S.M. Gunaratne, Vice Chairman of the UGC, and it has made the following moves with a view to enhancing the academic stature, research culture and intellectual atmosphere of the universities.
1. Increase of funding for postgraduate studies with provision for foreign exposure
2. Introduction of an Innovative Research Grant Scheme to support high priority research relevant to regional/national development in line with national policy
3. Establishment of an Encouragement Awards Scheme to promote academic excellence and high impact research
4. Establishment of Start-up Research Support Programme for the post-doctoral academics to initiate relevant research in line with their competencies and expertise
