EFFECTIVE DATE OF PROMOTION TO THE GRADE OF ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, PROFESSOR, GRADE I & II

1 .1 The Scheme of Recruitment for academic staff has specified the following merit/time-scale promotions to Associate Professor, Professor, Grade I & Professor, Grade II :-

(i) merit promotion from Senior Lecturer to Associate Professor;

(ii) merit promotion from Associate Professor to Professor, Grade II;

(iii) merit promotion from Professor, Grade II to Professor, Grade I;

(iv) time-scale promotion from Senior Lecturer to Associate Professor; and

(v) time-scale promotion from Professor, Grade II to Professor, Grade. I.

1.2 Commission Circular Nos. 328 of 10th October 1986 and 442 of 17th May 1990 have specified the effective date of promotion to Associate Professor on time-scale and merit. In order to have a uniformity in the process of promotion to the posts of Associate Professor, Professor, Grade II and Professor, Grade I, the Commission has decided that the effective date of promotions of the above categories should be the date on which the applicant's successful application was received by the Higher Educational Institution, provided -

(a) the meeting of the Council which considered the relevant recommendation of the Selection Committee for promotion was held after 20th March 1990, the effective date of Commission Circular No. 442,

(b) no additional documents werre received after the date of receipt of applications and/or no additional work done after that date were considered by the Selection Comittee.

1.3 The Higher Educational Institutions are requested to adhere to the guidelines given above when promoting to the grade mentioned in paragraph 1.1 above .

1.4 These provisions are effective from 20th March 1990.

PROMOTION TO ASSOCIATE PROFESSORSHIP (MEDICAL & NON-MEDICAL) ON MERIT

2.1 Your attention is drawn to the Scheme of Recruitment of the post of Associate Professor (Medical & Non-Medical) by merit promotion sent with Commission Circular No.228 of 31st May 1983.

2.2 The Commission, having examined the position of merit promotion to Associate Professorships, decided to delegate to the respective Councils of the Universities the authority to grant approval for merit promotions to Associate Professorship recommended by duly constituted Selection Comitees without having to refer them to the Commission for approval. The cadre provision can be created by suppressing the appointee's Senior Lecturer post.

2.3 The Commission has further decided to request the Universities to keep the UCC informed of such promotions so that the UGC can make the necessary adjustments in the cadre of the respective Universities.

2.4 These provisions are effective from 1st February 1991.
